Ssalefish GSO First Look #355 for 2.21.24
If you’re braver than I am, a life-long scaredy cat when it comes to all things horror, this weekend you can stop by and see the Ssalefish Concord crew at Mad Monster Party 2024, taking place Friday, February 16th through Sunday, February 18th at the Embassy Suites across Bruton Smith Blvd. from the shop down there! Colton has curated a massive selection for sale of every spooky story from all three Ssalefish locations and Concord manager Brian Kowalik will be slanging his original graphic novel Tales from Wajacueda Woods that came out late last year!
They’ll be exhibiting right alongside the likes of Smallville’s Clark Kent & Lex Luthor (Tom Welling & Michael Rosenbaum), 24’s Jack Bauer (Kiefer Southerland), American Pie’s Nadia (Shannon Elizaberth) and dozens of other leading men, scream queens, and wrestlers from the genre! And in another unique turn, the exhibit hall will be open 5 PM - 11 PM tomorrow night for the post-work hardcore crowd.

I’m pumped to announced that I’ll be attending my first comic convention is about 4 1/2 years in just about a month when Ssalefish Greensboro tables at the Durham Mini Comic Con on Saturday, March 2nd from 10 AM - 5 PM! Yep, if you don’t count Mask Con in the fall of 2020, which was really its own kind of thing built from necessity, it’ll have been since New York Comic Con in 2019 that I was at a full show with a roof and everything. And all the guests are my good buddies Chris Giarrusso (Officer Clawsome: Lobster Cop), Randy Green (Tomb Raider), Brian “Smitty” Smith (Pea Bee & Jay), Nakia Burrise (third Yellow Ranger), and Catherine Sutherland (second Pink Ranger)! And tickets are just $5!
In lieu of our infamous warehouse sales this spring, we’re gonna be hitting the road with our $1 comics, premium surplus, and a few other surprises at the Durham show, Mad Monster Party in Concord from Friday, February 16th - Sunday, February 18th and Matthews Comic-Con on Saturday, March 9th. We hope to see you there!

Here’s some cuddly Snips & Lydia for a dreary day that we’d all probably rather spend curled up on the couch with a copy of our favorite comic or graphic novel!
Unfortunately we’re rounding out the first month of the year with a dreaded fifth Wednesday that publishers typically take to catch their breath with a smaller-than-normal number of new releases, but it’s not without its bright spots, including Duke #2 tying into the Energon Universe, Avengers Twilight #2 (with a limited number of first printings and hand-drawn sketches available for those still wanting to jump on board), and the Trinity Special. which in addition to reprinting her first appearance in Wonder Woman #800 and back-up stories from Wonder Woman #1-5 also contains a brand-new Tom King story!

My actual birthday isn’t until July, but my big 40th birthday present to myself has already arrived! To be fair, it look almost six months from when I ordered it for it to come home, but as Carly said, the patience I learned along the way was a lesson in growing up all its own. My buddy Allan Corona from Thalassa Custom Basses did an incredible job finishing the body and assembling/ setting it up and as always I recommend him for any advice you may be looking for or job you need done. One of my other goals for this milestone year is learning to do set-ups myself so I don’t bother him as much.
Elsewhere in my life, I’m reading the fourth Discworld novel, Mort, by Terry Prachett, rewatching Bryan Fuller’s Pushing Daisies on Max (originally aired on ABC), plowed through my umpeenth pass of Craig Thompson’s Blankets, and still trying to make headway on Mario Wonder.

In lieu of a warehouse sale this month at our usual warehouse space with our usual warehouse stock, we’re bringing the warehouse sale pricing into the stores, where every regular back issue, regardless of what the sticker price says, will be $5 each or 10 for $25! Add into that our usual Buy 2 Get 1 FREE on all graphic novels and toys and you’ve got yourself a banger to round out the year.
And to clarify, our hours will NOT change at all due to New Year’s, we’ll still be open 12 PM - 5 PM on December 31st for New Year’s Eve and 11 AM - 7 PM on January 1st for New Year’s Day, and the New Releases listed below will be available at the regular times!

The Running of the Balls and Reindeer Romp (I got third in my age group) have been run, the company feast has been devoured (at KPot), and Love Actually has been watched while the tree was trimmed, so I guess it’s officially Christmastime! We always want to be as available as much as possible as an oasis of last minute gifts or an escape from your own holiday harriedness, so we only have a few minor changes to our hours:
Sunday, December 24th • Christmas Eve • 11 AM - 2 PM - opening an hour earlier than usual & closing a little earlier (five years of sales data show you guys are usually done with us by then).
Monday, December 25th • Christmas Day • CLOSED
And that’s it! We’ll be back to regular hours on December 26th and, if everything goes to plan, that’s the way it will be until Thanksgiving 2024. Unlike in years past, there’s also no “skip week” for new releases between Christmas & New Year’s, meaning it’s a typical full wall of books hitting the shelves on Tuesday & Wednesday, including G.I. Joe’s official entry into the shared Energon Universe with Duke #1, the final issue of the timely-released Batman/ Santa Claus Silent Knight, and the Something is Killing the Children tie-in Book of Butcher.
