Ssalefish GSO First Look #36 for 12.6.17

One thing everyone should know about me here just a little over four weeks from Christmas is that I'm a classic humbug. I'm a terrible gift-giver, a bashful receiver, and a pain to buy for because I get myself everything I want. I can't stand Christmas carols outside of the week immediately leading up to the day. I won't go to Friendly Center or the mall in avoidance of the crowds between Thanksgiving and the new year. I don't see the point of paying $50 for a tree, hauling it home, keeping the cats off of it for weeks, hoping it doesn't burn the house down, adding a chore to the list by watering it, having it get needles everywhere, then taking it right back out to the trash. And I think fake trees are tacky.

All of that said, I will watch Love Actually as I begrudgingly put all of my Marvel Tokidoki ornaments on the tree. I will belt along to Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in my car. I will try not to cry during the Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip episode  "The Christmas Show."

And I will do the following:

• Elon University Festival of Holiday Lights - Tuesday, December 5th, 6:30 PM. The campus, where by wife manages the bookstore, lights up their tree and lines all of the walkways with luminaries, plus free apple cider and hot chocolate. We'll grab some coffee at the Oak House and tacos from Tangent and take it all in.
   
• Running of the Balls 5K - Saturday, December 9th, 6:00 PM. The run winds through Lindley Park, featuring Greensboro's most iconic light show, with bands and choirs around every corner, and even more free hot chocolate and cookies after you cross the finish line!
   
• Star Wars: Episode VII - The Last Jedi Premiere - Thursday, December 14th, 7:00 PM. While it doesn't feel quite the same as the Lord of the Rings releases when I was in high school and college, three years in a row cements a tradition in my book, and I love setting up at the AMC Classic theater down the street and giving out comics.
   
• Geeksboro Coffee & Beverage Company's Pee Wee's Christmas & Secret Santa Screening - Sunday, December 16th, 7:00 PM. I'm not above cheating to get what I want!
   
• Leblon Steakhouse - Company dinner to indulge and ensure any misgivings about a home-cooked meal a few days later are assuaged.
