Stephen’s So-Called Emo Life!

  • Jaws - I had never actually seen the “first summer blockbuster” all the way through in one sitting before last night, and I was finally able to appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is. The fact that it got all the jump=scares out of Carly speaks to its power half a century later.

  • An American Werewolf in London - this was less of a masterpiece despite the terrific special effects, especially with as abruptly as it ends.

  • Upper Middle Bogan - not sure how we stumbled across this Australian found-family sitcom, but we’re three out of four seasons deep in less than a week!

Stephen’s So-Called Emo Life!

  • Here - I know nothing about the movie beyond the vague trailers, so I’m putting all my faith in the mind behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future, and Forrest Gump and hoping to be wowwed!

  • Ed Wood - Carly and I rented it for the first time since the early Aughts, and while I still wouldn’t say it’s my favorite Johnny Depp or Tim Burton film, I wasn’t left feeling burned out by overhype a la Donny Darko like I did as a freshman in college.

  • Mace Windu: Glass Abyss - not my favorite Jedi, but it’s a part of the canon so it’s a must-read.

We also have a limited number of the Trick or Read 2024 titles that will be available for FREE while supplies last on Saturday!

Stephen’s So-Called Emo Life!

  • Mr. McMahon - though I’ve never paid a ton of attention to wrestling, I’m fascinated by the personalities behind it, and this Netflix documentary gave me just enough to scratch that itch. But I doubt I’ll start watching any of their events the way I watched the entire NASCAR season after watching Dale Jr.’s Full Speed doc this time last year.

  • Yankees in the World Series - I’m both ecstatic and terrified of the wave of anxiety, remembering back to their last trip in 2009 and punching couch cushions and losing my cool when things were going badly.

Coming to you from our room on the 37th floor of Hotel Groove in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. Tomorrow we head home, so today is about shopping and squaring away all of our souvenirs in our new luggage. Due to international blackout restrictions blocking SNL and Great British Bake Off, pretty much the only thing we have going on in the Emo Life is Nobody Wants this on Netflix, which was a cute enough romantic comedy series. Since getting back to Tokyo, we’ve gone to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Making of Harry Potter, the Studio Ghibli Museum, and the life-size Unicorn Gundam.

I’m currently in our room at the Toy Story Hotel in the Toyko Disney Resort taking a break from our day at DisneySea, so I’m going to keep it brief, but after the 14 hour flight over here, it’s been the trip of a lifetime!

For a little Emo Life from the trip, I read the first quarter of Jason Pargin’s new book I’m Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom, I watched Drop Dead Gorgeous, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and D2: The Mighty Ducks, and I listened to the Sincere Engineer album Cheap Grills. Somewhere along the way I also slept about 4 hours.

Carly and I are practically counting down the hours to our trip to Japan! With that fresh on our minds, I’m not sure how our schedule or time dilation or availability to connect to the internet will allow me to make the next two regular posts, but I’d hate to break my seven-year plus streak, so I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated.

Stephen’s So-Called Emo Life!

  • Mercy of the Gods - the new novel from the creators of the Expanse. It took me 150 pages to get hooked, but now I can’t put down the last 300.

  • Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom - perfect timing to fill the twelve hour plane ride from Atlanta to Tokyo!
