Ssalefish GSO First Look #139 for 12.4.19

Is anyone more thankful for anything this year than Baby Yoda?!

I kid, of course.

But we’re very thankful for all of you, our faithful customers, and we hope that you’ll be starting the Christmas season off with us on the right foot (Hannah has been beginning me to let her decorate since November 1st), bright and early Friday morning at 8 AM!

Whelp, I tried to visit another comic book store while on my trip, but it was CLOSED! Typical of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.

I’ve said it over and over at the shop, but I think my favorite part of the trip may have actually been the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. I hadn’t over-researched it, I didn’t overthink where we would go and when, that was “Carly’s part of the trip,” and it made for such a surprising and chill experience.

Since July, I’ve read every book on that shelf, plus the Black Spire novel currently in my bag and the “Perfect Weapon” digital exclusive novella, totaling roughly 10,000 page of prose. I caught up on all 27 issues of Star Wars Adventures and all of the accompanying mini series while continuing to keep up with every Marvel comic. In case you missed it on Facebook the other day, Bret did an interview with comics retail trade magazine ICv2 the other day in which he officially announced the opening of our third store in Concord in 2020!

As a teenager, going to Concord Mills Mall when it opened in 1999 was the height of shopping luxury. Bruton Smith, owner of Charlotte Motor Speedway, was a Rockefeller. PNC Music Pavilion was the home of punk rock summer camp. And we’re gonna be at the heart of all of it, at Exit 49 on I-85, on the other side of the highway from the mall, off Bruton Smith Boulevard, 2 miles from the track, 4 miles from the venue!

I never really talked about the new store logo when switched it on Facebook and Instagram back in September. Basically, as much as I love the Ben Towle image and even though I think it completely captures the spirit of the business, we needed something simpler for things like decals (coming as soon as I pick up some blue vinyl and FREE with any purchase of $25 or more) and doormats (also coming soon) that could also work in a square or circle, since that’s how most social media images are formatted.
